Health Services

  • Every Child Deserves a School Nurse image The Health Services department provides school nursing services, public health announcements and health screenings for Chelsea Public School students.  Health Services staff strive to advance the health of the students by removing medical barriers to enhance optimal learning. Together, they promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. School nurses, the Health Technician, and Athletic Trainer work with families, school staff, and providers to promote effective health care programs in the Chelsea school community.

  • What Parents Should Know

    • Alert the school and school nurse if your child has a contagious disease to allow staff to protect the health of other students and staff.
    • If your child is absent, a written excuse note is expected upon the student’s return.
    • If your child is excused from PE class, a written notification is required beforehand from a parent of physician
    • If a student is injured or becomes ill at school, the school nurse will notify the person listed on the confidential health form.  If the injury or illness is severe, the student will be transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
    • School nurses and all school personnel are mandated reporters and are required to report cases of suspected abuse or neglect of a child.

When a Student Should Remain Home

A student should stay home from school when he or she has:

    • A fever that causes chills, sweats, or a temperature greater than 100 within 24 hours.
    • Vomiting or diarrhea
    • Inflamed eyes, yellow or green drainage
    • Head lice or nits
    • Bacterial infections not treated for 24 hours with antibiotics
    • Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages.  A child with a suspicious rash should return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis.

    Food in the Classroom

It is the policy of Chelsea Public Schools that outside food is not allowed as part of a class or student celebration as the danger of an allergic reaction is far too great and could result in needless tragedy. Everyone’s cooperation is essential for the health, safety, and protection of students and staff.
