Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
-
The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment works in collaboration with principals, instructional coaches, and educators in the areas of instruction, curriculum, assessment and professional learning.
The Department ensures that instruction is closely aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and integrates social-emotional competency building to promote deeper learning and accelerate student achievement.
Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks provide teachers, students and families with clear and shared expectations for what all students should know and be able to do at the end of each year. They represent a promise of equitable education by formalizing the expectation that all students in the Commonwealth have access to the same academic content, regardless of their zip code, background, or abilities.

Family Guides on Learning Standards
You can find guides to the Massachusetts learning standards that help families understand what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each grade. The guides on mass.edu are available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese.
Chelsea Public Schools: Year-Long Plans
Chelsea Public Schools collaborates with four other districts (Everett, Malden, Revere and Winthrop) to develop year-long curriculum plans that lay out clearly what students need to know, understand, and be able to do throughout their study of the core curriculum from kindergarten through middle school. The plans can be accessed via the 5DP website.
Assessment
The assessment portfolio of Chelsea Public Schools strives to measure both student achievement and growth and includes a wide range of assessments. These assessments include state-mandated tests such as ACCESS and MCAS, local districtwide assessments such as 5DP and subject-specific benchmarks, performance assessments and many formative assessments. Many of these tests are given via technology on various platforms.
