Homeless Student Transportation: McKinney-Vento Act

  • The federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homeless children and youths as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. However, because the circumstances of homelessness vary, determining the extent to which a family or youth fits the definition must occur on a case-by-case basis.

Chelsea Public Schools provides transportation services for homeless students, if warranted. The Homeless Liaison will gather and analyze information from the family or youth and make an appropriate determination of eligibility. In determining the type of transportation to be offered, the Homeless Liaison will take into account the best interest of the student, the student’s age, the distance to be traveled, access to public transportation, and the parents’ circumstances.
