The National Summer Reading theme for 2023 is:  Find your voice!”

As you know, teachers have been working hard to keep students reading by providing short stories, poems, novels and informational texts both physically and online so our students would develop a love of reading and continue to make reading gains. But now we need your help!

According to research, the number one factor related to students’ reading growth is the number of minutes spent reading  each day. By dedicating 20 minutes or more to reading each day, you can continue to grow as a reader even when you're not in school!

Please encourage your student to read over the summer! Summer reading is an exciting opportunity to read some of your favorite genres or try out new genres, such as mysteries, fiction, fantasy, science  fiction, or nonfiction! All of the books featured in the Summer Reading list have characters, themes, and big ideas about finding one’s voice.

This summer, we will do something similar to what we did last year. Here’s how it works:

    1. Students should commit to reading a book (in its entirety) based on their interests and  reading level. Remember, “books” are defined as physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks. You will receive a book of your choice from this list in the last few days of school!

    2. Choose how you’d like to express yourself in one of the assignments found here

    3. Bring in your assignment to your ELA teacher for a grade and a prize!

Where Can I Get the Books?

    Resources for Summer Reading Books

Students will receive a book to read at school, but here are options for reading more than one! Below are a few FREE resources where students can get books to read:

    1. Physical books: Students can read books they already have at home, from school giveaways, or get a book through the Chelsea Public Library. Each middle school will have a selection of physical books students can pick up during the school day. Click here for the titles that are being offered.
    2. Ebooks & audio books online: a few online sources that you probably have already used to access online books are listed  below:
      1. EPIC: has ebooks, audio books, and interactive books online for free! Website: getepic.com

      2. SORA: available through your Chromebooks in the Chelsea Schools Google apps, as well as in app stores for smartphones & tablets. SORA has a rotating selection of ebooks and audiobooks available through our school account. But you can also link to the MLS eBook Collection and the Boston Public Library for an even bigger selection!

        Website: https://soraapp.com/library/cpsma

      3. Libby: available online or as an app for smartphones or tablets, Libby allows access to thousands of  ebooks and audiobooks through public libraries. You must have a public library card to access Libby!

        Website: libbyapp.com

    3. If you don’t have a library card, email the Chelsea Public Library librarians at  coclibrary@chelseama.gov or call (617) 466-4355 to set up an account. You may also visit the CPL website at  https://www.chelseama.gov/departments/library/index.php
