Teachers help students reflect on their own learning and explain their reasoning using academic language. The school values students’ community, culture, and language heritage. Students in the Caminos Program study in English and Spanish every day, leaving the Kelly School on a pathway to earn the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diplomas!
Our Academic Focus and Approach
-
- Kelly School teachers plan and deliver rigorous, dynamic, and fun instruction, using a Universal Design
for Learning (UDL) approach to provide multiple ways for all learners to engage with challenging
content, show what they know, and become more independent learners. - All students work on Academically Productive Talk, or conversation that helps clarify their thinking, add
to each other’s understanding, and create new ideas together! - All students learn skills to “drive their brains” through the Mind-Up curriculum, which teaches kids about
the different parts of their brain, the brain’s role in emotions and learning, and how to manage feelings to
feel more safe, calm, and ready to learn. - Our special education programs include grades 1-2 and grades 3-4 Learning Center class rooms,
and academic and other services provided in inclusive classroom settings. - Comprehensive support services for English Language Learners include in-class and pull-out
services designed to accelerate students’ language acquisition. - Expert support from our three reading teachers, in-class math and reading tutors, highly qualified
classroom teachers, and trained paraprofessionals ensure all students get the attention they need to
learn to read, write, and solve problems in every content area. - Click here for our Accelerated Improvement Plan

Art Music, and After-School Programs
-
- The Kelly School is known for our visual and musical arts programs! All students in grades 1-6 enjoy art
and music classes at least once a week. - Students’ artwork is frequently displayed around the Kelly School, and selected artwork is featured in
the annual Chelsea Public Schools Art Show every spring. - The Kelly School has multiple musical performances a year, including a Winter Concert, Spring Band
Concert, Kelly School Musical, and informal performances at whole-school assemblies. - Many 5th and 6th grade students deepen their instrumental and vocal skills as part of the Kelly School
Band or Kelly School Chorus, and choose an enrichment elective class focused on producing the Kelly
School Musical. - Before and after school programs offered by community partner organizations include For Kids Only
(on-site), Jordan Boys and Girls Club, The Salvation Army Kids Club of Chelsea, East Boston Social
Center and CAPIC.

New This Year
-
- Our Caminos dual-language program is “growing up” to 6 th grade in the 2019-2020 school year. We’re
excited to extend students’ bilingual-immersion learning from Kindergarten (at the ELC) to 6 th grade, and
fully support the District’s plan to offer dual-language opportunities in 7 th and 8 th grade at a CPS middle
school next school year. - In the 2020-2021 school year, all four of our 1 st grade classes will be dual-language Caminos classes; as
that group of students ages up, the Kelly School will gradually become a fully dual-language school! - The school playground will be completely re-built this fall with all new equipment, play surfaces, seats,
trees and flowers. We request that all families help make sure students are safe during arrival and
dismissal every day and be flexible with us along the way.
