What is the Intergenerational Literacy Program?

The ILP is a program for adults, out-of-school youth, and families. We offer courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and preparation for high school equivalency exams (HiSET/GED) in Spanish. We also offer classes for parents and caregivers who want to improve their reading and writing and who want to learn how to further support their children in school.

Online classes are held on Zoom. In-person classes are held at the John Silber Early Learning Center in Chelsea. Classes are held in the morning, afternoon, and evening, Monday through Thursday.

Classes

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL Levels 1, 2, and 3: These classes are for Massachusetts residents who want to improve their English language and literacy. Three levels of ESOL are offered.  All new students will be assessed for placement.

ESOL Family Literacy: These classes are for parents and caregivers who want to improve their reading and writing.  Participants will also learn how to support their children in school.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

ABE for Youth and Adults: These classes are for Massachusetts residents ages 16 and above to prepare them to take the high school equivalency exam (HiSET or GED) in English or Spanish. 

Pre-ABE: These classes, only offered in Spanish, provide adults and youth (ages 16-22) with the literacy skills needed to enter high school equivalency classes.

Classes for Children

Pre-School Children: Preschool children will attend classes to help prepare them for school while their parents are in class.

School-Aged Children: School-aged children will get homework assistance and participate in other developmentally appropriate activities, including social-emotional learning during the time their parents are in class.
