We believe that our students deserve access to the type of rich, broad curriculum found in the best suburban and independent schools. With an extended school day, we are able to offer a wide range of classes that are unique for an urban public school in this era of testing and accountability.
Students in our school spend an extra two-and-a-half hours each day in school than other students in the city. We take advantage of this time to offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities, while still providing intensive academic support in core areas. Our enrichment opportunities include:
- Elective courses: During our enrichment block, made possible by our extended day, students take exciting classes that build skills and habits of mind that set them on track for success in high school and college. These classes also are a big reason why many students are so excited to come to school. Class offerings have included: rock band, debate, current events, documentary films, reading to younger students, travel planning, and many others.
- Partner-supported apprenticeships: students in the fifth and sixth grade have the opportunity to participate in apprenticeships where they learn the kind of skills they will need to be successful in their future careers. Apprentices learn from professionals such as lawyers, computer programmers, engineers, scientists and others about their jobs and have show what they know in Citizen Schools WOWs that showcase their learning.
- Rich arts curriculum: All BMS students take music, art and technology classes. Additionally, many students participate in our band and chorus, which perform frequently around Chelsea.
- Athletics: the BMS fields inter-scholastic teams in soccer, basketball, flag football and volleyball for 7th and 8th graders. Our 5th and 6th grade students have opportunities to participate in intra-mural sports activities in our extended day. Additionally, we have an amazing physical education program.
