Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community:
It is with genuine excitement that I announce the promotion of Chelsea High School Principal, Priti Johari to the position of Chelsea Public Schools Assistant Superintendent for Strategic Programs and Accountability effective July 1, 2018. Leadership in education today takes a deep and unshakeable belief in the power of a high quality education to open the doors of opportunity for all students. Education is social justice. These beliefs are the prerequisites to join my leadership team as we lead our schools on behalf of all students and families whom “We Welcome and Educate.” Ms. Johari lives and breathes these convictions each and every day.
Ms. Johari brings to this position a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience in school leadership, educational research, and school turnaround strategies and practices. Ms. Johari is a graduate of the University of Chicago where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and South Asian Languages and Civilizations. She holds two Master’s degrees. She received a Master of Public Policy from the University of Southern California and a Master in Education in School Leadership at Harvard University. Ms. Johari joined the staff of the Chelsea Public Schools in July 2011 as the Redesign Administrator at Chelsea High School and was promoted to Principal July 1, 2014. For the last four years she has worked tirelessly on deepening and refining the community’s “Vision of the Graduate” at Chelsea High School (CHS).
In 2018, leadership in education, especially urban education, is difficult, demanding, and at times, frustrating work. It takes commitment, courage, vision, and a “can do” attitude to get things done, Ms. Johari is all of these and more. As principal, Ms. Johari was a partner with me as we guided CHS through the last few years of dramatic student demographic shifts. She responded to student needs by building programs and services with her teams to address the most urgent student needs as well as the long term visioning needs. I deeply admire Ms. Johari’s keen eye for diagnosing gaps in education and being able to go from vision to implementation in building structures and systems that support deep student learning. However, what I respect most is her belief in reflecting, growing, and learning alongside educators from the easiest to hardest work being done.
Ms. Johari’s leadership and work is respected throughout the state where CHS programs and initiatives are being studied and replicated. Working side-by-side with her strong teams at Chelsea High, she led the development and implementation of the Capstone Project, the Early College Program, and applied for and received the $1.1 million dollar Turnaround Grant for CHS. Ms. Johari has published an article on the Capstone Project in the highly respected education journal, Voices in Urban Education. The work that CHS has implemented has been seen by many as “cutting edge” and “redefining” what education should look like for all students.
To replace Ms. Johari, we are posting for principal candidates. We will convene a “Selection Committee” to do the first round of interviews from the pool of candidates. The job of the Selection Committee will be to narrow the field of candidates to the top 2-3 highest qualified for me to interview. I will choose from the 2-3 finalists. The Selection Committee will be made up of representatives of various stakeholder groups.
I want to thank Ms. Johari for her leadership at Chelsea High School over the last eight years and I am excited that she has agreed to step forward into the position of Assistant Superintendent for Programs and Accountability as we prepare for pending retirements in Central Office. In addition, I am personally looking forward to working and learning alongside Ms. Johari as we move our schools and community forward, together.Sincerely yours,
Dr. Mary M. Bourque
