Chelsea Public Schools - Bridge to Success

Chelsea Prospers Mini Grants

Chelsea Prospers, the downtown initiative for Chelsea, is offering mini-grants for placemaking projects in the downtown.

$200 to $750 is available for temporary activation efforts taking place between September 2017 and March 2018.

Placemaking is the process of working together to shape public spaces. Through the tools of placemaking public spaces become where the community gathers to interactive and to collectively nurture healthier, more social, and economically viable communities. For this round exclusively temporary projects are sought. Project examples include but are not limited to temporary public art performances or installations, guided walks and tours, pop-up events, as well as "tactical urbanism" projects like parklets, chair bombing, “guerilla gardening” and temporary bike lanes. Applicants are encouraged to submit unique, thought-provoking ideas for enhancing public spaces in a manner that encourages conversation, socializing, and positive use of our shared assets.

These kind of small scale projects are ideal for City commissions. For example, the Historic Commission could lead a walking tour. The Tree Commission could do an Arbor Day event in the downtown that would awaken the empty tree pits on Broadway. The Youth Commission might host a teen dance party in the parking lots on Fifth Street. I have a presentation – slideshow and discussion -- that goes into detail on the principles of placemaking that I’d love to share with community groups. I can also meet with prospective applicants one-on-one to help refine their applications.
