Chelsea Public Schools - Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement

Welcome to Chelsea Public Schools

We want everyone who visits the Chelsea Public Schools website to feel welcome and find the experience rewarding. We believe digital equity is a fundamental right, not an afterthought.

The Value of This Statement

An accessibility statement is a critical feature for any school district deeply committed to cultivating diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This public-facing transparency page serves as a detailed outline of why, how, and exactly what measures Chelsea Public Schools has implemented to dismantle barriers to access and ensure universal usability for all visitors. It allows us to:

  • Show our users that we care about them and respect their needs.
  • Provide critical information about the accessibility of our content.
  • Model accountability and continuous improvement.

Is an accessibility statement mandatory? Currently, no explicit laws in the United States force organizations to publish a standalone accessibility statement. However, maintaining one is a powerful indicator of a positive organizational culture. To guarantee it is always easy to find, we feature this page prominently within logical menu structures and on our website's footer overview.

How are we doing?

We've worked hard on the Chelsea Public Schools website and are proud to report that we have achieved our goal of Level AA accessibility. Here is what we actively monitor:

  • Screen Reader Optimization We use semantic HTML markup and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes to ensure all content, dynamic updates, and interactive elements are accurately conveyed to screen readers.
  • Keyboard Navigation Every interactive element on our site can be accessed and operated using only a keyboard. We manage focus states clearly so users always know where they are on the page.
  • Reduced Motion Support We respect operating system preferences. If a user has "reduce motion" enabled on their device, all non-essential CSS animations and transitions are automatically disabled.
  • Color Contrast We strictly adhere to a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, ensuring content is readable for users with low vision or color blindness.

Our Technical Standard

To help us make the Chelsea Public Schools website a positive place for everyone, we've been using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user friendly for everyone.

The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA and AAA). We've chosen Level AA as the target for the Chelsea Public Schools website.
