Tray-less Breakfast and Tray-less Tuesday
Polystyrene lunch trays are used in schools across the country, and the waste they create is very damaging to the environment. Polystyrene products require large quantities of petroleum products for their creation, and recycling them produces even more pollution. The trays themselves can take hundreds of years to biodegrade, causing more pollution in the process.
I would like to remove trays for breakfast all together, and initiate Tray-less Tuesdays. By choosing one day out of each week (Tuesdays) I would like remove all polystyrene trays for the entire lunch period. (Trays will be made available under registers, if there are students in need of them only). This will be effective on Monday April 4th.
Although this solution still involves the use of the trays, removing them will amount to a huge savings to the district and for the environment.
If Tray-less Tuesday works well, I would like to remove them beginning in the 2011-12 school year.
This project will enable the Chelsea School Lunch Program to reduce waste and work towards a more environmentally sustainable district and save several amount of money. The final results could save as much as 25-30% less waste, according to a 2008 study done by a food service management company.
