Sokolowski School Garden

The Sokolowski School Garden is lovingly tended by Ms. Santagate's Grade 2 students in Room 201. Find out how it started and see pictures!

In 2009, while at the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, Ms. Santagate put in a bid at the event's silent auction for a raised bed organic produce garden installed by Green City Growers. To her surprise, she won the bid and decided it would be a perfect project for her second graders. The amazing staff at Green City Growers came to school in June 2009 to help the second grade get started. That first summer they grew tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, lettuce and squash. In 2010, they decided to add a flower berm. In addition to the vegetables, they grew sunflowers, tulips, daffodils, lilies, marigolds, salvia, zinnias and morning glory. In Spring 2011, they started a small worm farm in their classroom to experiment with worm castings as soil fertilizer. In Summer 2011, thanks to the power of the worms, they grew the best sunflowers and cherry tomatoes ever in addition to a variety of other vegetables and flowers.

The current grade 2 class is eager to start the gardening process. Who knows what the Room 201 urban farmers will grow in 2012?!
